French phytoplankton monitoring: an exploration of optimum data presentation ArchiMer
Belin, Catherine.
Different ways are explored for presenting 12 years of data on phytoplankton species and toxins in shellfish collected along the French coast and within the framework of the French Phytoplankton Monitoring Network. The advantages and difficulties of aggregating data in different dimensions are discussed. For example, graphs appear suitable only for restricted areas, while mapping is necessary for results on regional or larger scales. Within each of these broad categories, considerable care is required when identifying the appropriate type of information and presentation.

Haplotype identification within Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) corn and rice strains from Colombia Neotropical Entomology
Salinas-Hernandez,H; Saldamando-Benjumea,CI.
The fall army worm Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) is a migratory important pest of corn, sorghum, rice, grass and bermudagrass in North and South America. This species has diverged into two genetically differentiated but morphologically identical strains, "the rice" and "the corn". They have been analyzed by sequencing the genes cytochrome oxydase I, II and ITS1 from populations from the United States and Brazil. However, no such studies were performed in Colombia. In here, we identified 43 haplotypes by sequencing a fragment of the COI gene from 102 individuals, of which 40 had already been identified as the "corn" and "rice" strains or to their hybrids from Tolima, and the rest were collected from corn, cotton, sorghum, grass and rice fields in other...

Hidden action, risk aversion and variable fines in agri-environmental schemes AgEcon
Ozanne, Adam; White, Benedict.
This note analyses the design of agri-environmental schemes for risk-averse producers whose input usage is only observable by costly monitoring. The scheme penalises producers in proportion to input use in excess of a quota. A striking result is that if the scheme is designed in such a way that producers always comply with the quota, risk aversion is not relevant in determining the level of input use.

High resolution mass spectrometry for quantitative analysis and untargeted screening of algal toxins in mussels and passive samplers ArchiMer
Zendong, Suzie Zita; Mccarron, Pearse; Herrenknecht, Christine; Sibat, Manoella; Amzil, Zouher; Cole, Richard B.; Hess, Philipp.
Measurement of marine algal toxins has traditionally focussed on shellfish monitoring while, over the last decade, passive sampling has been introduced as a complementary tool for exploratory studies. Since 2011, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has been adopted as the EU reference method (No.15/2011) for detection and quantitation of lipophilic toxins. Traditional LC-MS approaches have been based on low-resolution mass spectrometry (LRMS), however, advances in instrument platforms have led to a heightened interest in the use of high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) for toxin detection. This work describes the use of HRMS in combination with passive sampling as a progressive approach to marine algal toxin surveys. Experiments...

How to Track Adaptation to Climate Change: A Typology of Approaches for National-Level Application Ecology and Society
Ford, James D.; McGill University; james.ford@mcgill.ca; Berrang-Ford, Lea ; McGill University ; lea.berrangford@mcgill.ca; Lesnikowski, Alex; McGill University; alesnikowski@gmail.com; Barrera, Magda; McGill University ;; Heymann, S. Jody; UCLA Fielding School of Public Health ; jody.heymann@ph.ucla.edu.
The need to track climate change adaptation progress is being increasingly recognized but our ability to do the tracking is constrained by the complex nature of adaptation and the absence of measurable outcomes or indicators by which to judge if and how adaptation is occurring. We developed a typology of approaches by which climate change adaptation can be tracked globally at a national level. On the one hand, outcome-based approaches directly measure adaptation progress and effectiveness with reference to avoided climate change impacts. However, given that full exposure to climate change impacts will not happen for decades, alternative approaches focus on developing indicators or proxies by which adaptation can be monitored. These include systematic...

Human and animal enteric caliciviruses in oysters from different coastal regions of the United States ArchiMer
Costantini, V; Loisy, Fabienne; Joens, L; Le Guyader, Soizick; Saif, L.
Food-borne diseases are a major cause of morbidity and hospitalization worldwide. Enteric caliciviruses are capable of persisting in the environment and in the tissues of shellfish. Human noroviruses (HuNoVs) have been implicated in outbreaks linked to shellfish consumption. The genetic and antigenic relatedness between human and animal enteric calliciviruses suggests that interspecies transmission may occur. To determine the occurrence of human and animal enteric calliciviruses in United States market oysters, we surveyed regional markets. Oysters were collected from 45 bays along the United States coast during the summer and winter of 2002 and 2003. Samples were analyzed by reverse transcription-PCR, and results were confirmed by hybridization and...

Identification and characterization of deforestation hot spots in Venezuela using MODIS satellite images Acta Amazonica
Pacheco,Carlos Eduardo; Aguado,María Inmaculada; Mollicone,Danilo.
Land cover changes over time as a result of human activity. Nowadays deforestation may be considered one of the main environmental problems. The objective of this study was to identify and characterize changes to forest cover in Venezuela between 2005-2010. Two maps of deforestation hot spots were generated on the basis of MODIS data, one using digital techniques and the other by means of direct visual interpretation by experts. These maps were validated against Landsat ETM+ images. The accuracy of the map obtained digitally was estimated by means of a confusion matrix. The overall accuracy of the maps obtained digitally was 92.5%. Expert opinions regarding the hot spots permitted the causes of deforestation to be identified. The main processes of...

If services aren't delivered, people won't pay: the role of measurement problems and monitoring in Payments for Environmental Services AgEcon
Meijerink, Gerdien W..
The idea of Payments for environmental services (PES) has an appealing simplicity, which may explain the success of the concept. However, successful projects are far limited though and two constraints have been identified in literature. The first is limited demand: too few service users are so confident about the mechanism that they are willing to pay. The second obstacle is poor knowledge on the institutional requirements entailing incentive and livelihood mechanisms which so far have received comparatively less attention. This paper focuses on both constraints by arguing that monitoring effectiveness and conditionality of PES schemes are crucial and that institutional arrangements for monitoring should be in place. By analysing in a systematic way what...

Incentive effect of joint and several liability in fishery cooperatives on regulatory compliance ArchiMer
Bellanger, Manuel; Holland, Daniel S.; Anderson, Christopher M.; Guyader, Olivier.
Cooperative‐based catch share systems can be implemented such that the members of the same fishery cooperative are jointly and severally liable for not exceeding collectively assigned fishing rights. In practice, this means that a regulator can take away catch privileges from an entire cooperative that overruns its collective quota, effectively creating a penalty much larger than what could be recovered with an individual fine. Fishery cooperatives then typically implement their own internal compliance regime that includes monitoring and penalties. This article first reviews compliance practice in cooperative‐based catch share systems by examining the commonalities and differences in the way compliance regimes are structured (observation and reporting...

Indices for assessing coral reef fish biodiversity: the need for a change in habits ArchiMer
Loiseau, Nicolas; Gaertner, Jean-claude.
We present the first representative and quantified overview of the indices used worldwide for assessing the biodiversity of coral reef fishes. On this basis, we discuss the suitability and drawbacks of the indices most widely used in the assessment of coral fish biodiversity. An extensive and systematic survey of the literature focused on coral reef fish biodiversity was conducted from 1990 up to the present. We found that the multicomponent aspect of biodiversity, which is considered as a key feature of biodiversity for numerous terrestrial and marine ecosystems, has been poorly taken into account in coral reef fish studies. Species richness is still strongly dominant while other diversity components, such as functional diversity, are underestimated even...

Insects related to Olive culture in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil Ciência Rural
Ricalde,Marcelo Perrone; Nava,Dori Edson; Loeck,Alci Enimar; Coutinho,Enilton Fick; Bisognin,Alexandre; Garcia,Flávio Roberto Mello.
The increased cultivation of olive trees in Rio Grande do Sul State and its potential production arouse the need to characterize the assemblage of insects in olive groves, especially those with potential as pests. Therefore, the insect fauna was sampled monthly for two years, in the canopy of olive trees, using beat cloth, and collection of buds in five municipalities in Southern Rio Grande do Sul State. The faunal indices analyzed were abundance, constancy, dominance and frequency. The olive caterpillar Palpita forficifera Munroe 1959 (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and mealybugs Saissetia oleae (Olivier, 1791) and Saissetia coffeae (Walker, 1952) (Hemiptera: Coccidae) are the main phytophagous insects in olive farms in the Rio Grande do Sul State, with...

Insights into integrating cumulative effects and collaborative co-management for migratory tundra caribou herds in the Northwest Territories, Canada Ecology and Society
Gunn, Anne; ; gunnan@telus.net; Russell, Don; ; don.russell@ec.gc.ca; Greig, Lorne; ESSA Technologies Ltd.; lgreig@essa.com.
Globally, many migratory mammals are facing threats. In northern Canada, large annual ranges expose migratory caribou to an array of human activities, including industrial exploration and development. Recognition that responses to human activities can accumulate for caribou is long-standing, but is heightened by recent declines in caribou abundance. For example, since the mid-1990s, the Bathurst herd has declined by approximately 90%, leading to severe harvest restrictions. More mines are being proposed and developed across the herd’s annual range, raising questions about cumulative effects. Despite progress on assessment techniques, aboriginal groups are expressing strong concerns and frustration about gaps in responsibilities for who should...
